Christ Church Cathedral

Picture
Christ Church Cathedral welcomes everyone to the Lord's table.  Jesus extends an invitation to all persons, regardless of their sexual orientation.  For more than 30 years, we have embraced our gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) brothers and sisters in Christ as part of our family of faith.  Together, we have strived for justice and healing, respecting the dignity of all human beings.  GLBTQ persons proclaim the Gospel in virtually every area of our life together as teachers, healers, ministers and servants.

The Cathedral is in the network of "Oasis" congregations found across the country.  These are congregations which have been through an educational process exploring what it means to be explicitly welcoming to GLBTQ Christians and their families.  In 2000, the Cathedral signed an "Affirmation of Welcome" stating its intention to be fully welcoming -- purposeful in welcoming, advocating for, and embracing the ministry, witness and gifts of all persons in our gathered body.

Christ Church United Church of Christ

Picture
About Christ Church
Christ Church has a long and historic tradition of ministry in Maplewood, Missouri beginning in 1890. An expression of our United Church of Christ values of creating inclusive community around Jesus' welcome table, taking the Bible seriously in study and dialogue, and embodying Christ ministries of healing, justice and peace. Christ Church continues to be a place where faith development and growth are encouraged. We offer worship services to the glory of God so that "Whoever you are, and wherever you have been on life's journey, you are welcome in this community of faith."

About the United Church of Christ
The United Church of Christ respects freedom of individual conscience, and there are no "tests of faith" mandatory on our members, but we do honor the historic testimonies of our spiritual ancestors as they explored the Bible and applied its insights. The most important of these testimonies are gathered here. United Church of Christ is a community of faith that seeks to respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed. The UCC was founded in 1957 as the union of several different Christian traditions: from the beginning of our history, we were a church that affirmed the ideal that Christians did not always have to agree to live together in communion. Our motto-"that they may all be one"-is Jesus' prayer for the unity of the church. The UCC is one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States. The UCC embraces a theological heritage that affirms the Bible as the authoritative witness to the Word of God, the creeds of the ecumenical councils, and the confessions of the Reformation. The UCC has roots in the "covenantal" tradition-meaning there is no centralized authority or hierarchy that can impose any doctrine or form of worship on its members. Christ alone is Head of the church. We seek a balance between freedom of conscience and accountability to the apostolic faith.

Christ UCC Vision Statement
We believe that all people are made in the image of God and that all are welcome at Christ's table. We aspire to be an open-minded community of faith, engaged in meaningful worship, and committed to social justice, community service, and personal spiritual growth.

Episcopal Church of the Advent

Picture
In our baptismal vows, Episcopalians pledge “to respect the dignity of every human being” and “to seek and serve Christ in all persons”.  Episcopalians have always had a strong sense of ministry to the world.  At Advent, we participate in the Episcopal Habitat for Humanity Project, Episcopal City Mission (chaplaincy to youth in detention) and other outward-focused ministries.  We do this not because it is a duty, but because we believe we encounter Christ in others.

Because we seek to see Christ in others, we believe that we will have a clearer image of the great messianic banquet when the Body of Christ which gathers for our eucharistic meal on Sunday is as diverse as possible.  Therefore, we strive to welcome all persons into our fellowship.  After years as a comfortable suburban parish, Advent has begun to take seriously our Lord's call, not only to welcome all into our fellowship, but to invite all to the table.  We seek to extend Christ's invitation to persons of all races, all backgrounds and all orientations, “from East and West, from North and South” to join the feast.

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis

Picture
In 1968, a young man named Troy Perry decided that things needed to be different for LGBT people of faith. Having been turned away by his home church and his family because he is gay, he decided to start a church in Los Angeles where LGBT people could worship freely. Twelve people attended the first worship service, held in his living room. That small gathering in 1968 launched the international movement of Metropolitan Community Churches, which today has grown to 43,000 members and almost 300 congregations in 22 countries.

Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis (MCCGSL) was founded in October 1973.  And, like our parent church, we started small: ten people attended our first service.  But those ten people, full of faith and vision and determination to make a difference, began a church which today has nearly 400 in membership and has ministered to thousands throughout the Greater St. Louis.

Neve Shalom

Picture
Neve Shalom was founded because we believe that we are contributing to the creating of a new model for the American synagogue. At Neve Shalom, we always take the tradition as our model, but we also value imagination and creativity as tools for renewal. We believe that we are making space for an authentic spirituality to rise, and a deepening of living through the myths, symbols, and rituals of our people. This is a synagogue with a vision, and we hope we can communicate some of that vision in this document.

Neve Shalom belongs to the Network of Jewish Renewal Communities (see www.aleph.org). The Jewish Renewal "movement" began as a teaching, or a group of teachers, that were influenced by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. Reb Zalman attracted a group of students and teachers that were associated with small communities that arose spontaneously, mostly in North America, to teach each other the wisdom of Judaism and to practice that wisdom with vitality and holy intent.  It began and continues to be a non-dogmatic form of Judaism, rejecting the sectarian nature of denomentational Judaism.

Saint Mark's Episcopal Church

Picture
An Episcopal Church where each person is valued.  In our worship, we gather to praise God, to listen for God’s Word, to experience Christ in community and in the sharing of bread and wine.

Our services are at once formal and relaxed, traditional and up to the minute. Ritual both expresses and shapes our experience of the Holy One.

It takes a while to get used to sitting, standing, and taking communion and to learn the responses and music but there is no wrong way to praise God, so please don’t feel embarrassed or afraid to ask the clergy and ushers questions.

We use the Book of Common Prayer and Enriching Our Worship which means that we worship using language with medieval and reformation roots and language which reclaims feminine images of God found in scripture and tradition. Everyone present participates fully in our services, lay people share leadership with the clergy, children are encouraged to worship with their parents and are welcome to receive the Holy Communion once they are baptized.

Shaare Zedek Synagogue

Shaare Zedek Synagogue, led by Rabbi Mark Fasman and Hazzan Joanna Dulkin, is a dynamic, inclusive, caring and haimish Conservative congregation in U City.  We hold services twice daily, morning and evening, including Shabbat and festivals.  Childcare is available at Shabbat and High Holiday services. On Shabbat mornings, we offer engaging programming for tots, youth and families in addition to those held in the main sanctuary.  Our signature Friday night service, Shabbat Rinah, occurs weekly at 6pm, fuses old and new music to create a welcoming and spiritually uplifting Shabbat experience.

We house a thriving Early Childhood Center, as well as Shaare Shalom Religious school, a joint venture with BSKI (http://ssrsstl.org).  Three youth groups, provide informal youth programming for children in 5th-12 grade, and our dynamic DorWays group offers a variety of family programming and outreach. Shir Hadash Reconstructionalist Community

Picture
Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community is a small, welcoming, and participatory congregation.  We create a sense of community and caring through active engagement of our members.  We were founded as, and continue to be, a community that welcomes all Jews regardless of current levels or past practices of observance or knowledge.  Gay and Lesbian Jews, Jews by choice, minority Jews, and non-Jewish partners have always been important members of our community.

In our communal and religious activities, we encourage and welcome new perspectives, intellectual curiosity, spiritual exploration, and creativity among our members. This is a hallmark of the Reconstructionist movement, which seeks to integrate our Jewish identities with the world around us.  We are also proud of the Reconstructionist movement’s historical and continued commitment to the GLBT community including its pioneering support of the ordination of GLBT rabbis and full marriage equality.

Diversity in our congregation adds to our creative energy.  We are large enough to meet the needs of all our congregants, yet small enough to know your name.

Our worship seeks to blend our liberal Reform Jewish roots with contemporary sound and language to create a warm, meaningful and participatory worship experience. We believe in the power of prayer to affect our hearts and souls; to bring healing and renewal to our lives.  We are committed to lifelong Jewish learning.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Picture
Called to witness to God's grace in the midst of the city, our lively and diverse congregation in the Central West End of St. Louis has a long and rich history of commitment to issues of social justice, peace, and racial and gender equality. We come from many parts of the metropolitan area and all walks of life, and treasure our worship rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Music, education, and outreach are valued aspects of our lives together. Traditional and non-traditional families are warmly welcomed; children are an important part of our life, and are nurtured in an atmosphere of tolerance and acceptance.

With open hearts and minds, we are seeking to know, love, and serve God in our daily lives at home, in the church, and in the world. God calls us to bring our joys and sorrows, our confusion and certainty, our strength and weakness to the altar of grace where we are nourished by the divine life of Christ. Wherever you are on your journey of faith, there is a place for you at the table here at Trinity.
